Goal of TIDE Complex Diagnostic Clinic

To enhance diagnostic success in ‘complex ID’ patients (=patients with global developmental delay / intellectual disability plus prominent other features, in whom the etiology remains unknown) through multispecialty evaluation and communication synergized into a state-of-the-art diagnostic plan using innovative technologies, which is translated into a laymen’s summary for the family.

Organization

  • Organizing team: Clara van Karnebeek, Marion Thomas
  • Frequency: 1x per 2 months
  • Each patient seen by 3 specialists (8-11am)
  • Multidisciplinary rounds to formulate differential diagnosis and plan for testing (11am-noon)
  • Systematic evaluation patient & family and specialist experiences as well as diagnostic yield

  • Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Ethics, Medical Anthropology
  • Any other relevant specialties (orthopedics, gastro-enterology, hematology, rheumatology etc upon invitation)

Eligibility Criteria

A patient is eligible for the complex diagnostic clinic if the following criteria are met:
  • Referral by a physician in Medical Genetics, Neurology, Biochemical Diseases, Developmental Pediatrics, Child Psychiatry
  • Global Developmental delay / intellectual disability of unknown cause after the implementation of the TIDE protocol
  • other systemic, neurological, psychiatric-behavioral features AND/OR biochemical abnormalities which could guide further diagnostic evaluation
  • potential benefit from multispecialty evaluation
  • parents / patient are informed of, agree with the referral

Funding

TIDE-BC is the first Collaborative Area of Innovation funded through the BC Children's Hospital Foundation, Vancouver, Canada. To expand the project (inter-)nationally funding application is ongoing.
